=User Interface=
The LinuxMCE on-screen Orbiter User Interface (UI) was designed to be viewed on a basic television from 10' away. There are currently three versions of the UI, and selection depends on the type of video card you have. UI1 is the most basic, and runs on all video cards. UI2 with masking will run on a majority of graphics card (with OpenGL and XDamage support), but UI2 alpha-blended is confirmed to work only with certain nVidia graphics cards. UI1 takes over the screen whenever you bring up the menu; any video that is playing is reduced to a window. In UI2 your media is always full-screen and is never reduced. (When you're not watching your own video or photos, LinuxMCE displays gallery art from flickr or a selection of your own photos).

With this tutorial I'll try to summarize the step involved in building the LinuxMCE CDs and DVDs together with some changes that I've done when switching from Kubuntu 0704 to Kubuntu 0710.

== Requirements ==

* Powerful enough system to do the compilation and building of packages as is a cpu intensive task and it can take quite a long time.
* Lot of disk space, at least 40G hard drive.
* A working internet connection as the build and preparation process will need to access get some files from the public domain.

''First Steps'':
* Install Kubuntu 0804. I use the desktop installation CD and i would recommend to do the same as this steps will consider this kind of installation performed. Of course an Ubuntu Server or Alternate CD will work too but you may need to install some build dependencies / runtime libraries that I have by default installed on Kubuntu 0804.
* Install some subversion so you can checkout a copy of the build script from LinuxMCE's svn.

The next step after having 0804 installed is to get a copy of the build script:

The sources for this debs are located in trunk/ubuntu directory of the svn this means /var/lmce-build/svn/trunk/ubuntu on your local machine (after the svn checkout). Moust of this sources are in a deb-src format. The created debs will be stored in ''/var/lmce-build/replacements/'' directory.

;build-script/build-makerelease.sh
:Build a c++ linuxmce application and it's dependencies from the linuxmce svn. This application, called ''MakeRelease'' it's used to build and pack all the linuxmce packages. The output files will be stored in ''/var/lmce-build/MakeRelease/'' when the script finishes.

;build-script/import-database.sh
:This script takes the latest version of the LinuxMCE MySQL databases from the LinuxMCE server. The information from this databases is used by MakeRelease to build and compile the software. The databases will also be used to create some sqldumps that will be packaged on the LinuxMCE CDs and DVSs that are created.

;build-scripts/build-maindebs.sh
:Runs MakeRelease and based on the information from the database compiles and packs the linuxmce packages using the sources stored in ''/var/lmce-build/svn''. The created debs will be stored in ''/var/lmce-build/out/tmp'' directory.

;build-scripts/get-closed-source-debs.sh
:Download the latest pluto debs which are build on a remote server. This debs are compiled from source which are object of some Pluto NDAs and cannot be made public (ex: pluto-zwave).

;build-script/create-repo.sh
:After all the needed packages are created / downloaded, this script copies them from their output directories and stores them in ''/var/www/'' directory. It also creates a Packages.gz file so you can use that directory as a repository which you can add in sources.list.

;build-script/cd1-build.sh
:Creates LinuxMCE CD1. This cd will contain moust of the linuxmce specific debs but also some Ubuntu debs which are needed for by LinuxMCE application and are not installed by default in Kubuntu. :Creates LinuxMCE CD2. This cd contains only few linuxmce debs and a lot of ubuntu debs which are not installed by default on a Kubuntu system but are needed douring the install process. The Ubuntu debs are copied from ''/var/lmce-build/cd2-packages/'' folder.

:This script uses the LinuxMCE CD1&2 to automatically install LinuxMCE on a clean Kubuntu system. All the installation takes place in vmware virtual machine and at the end of the installation the script will create a tar.gz image of the vmware disk directory structure. This tar.gz image will be used for creating the dvd image.

;build-dvd/build-cd.sh
:This script takes the tar.gz image created by the install_in_vmware.sh script and generates the bootable dvd image. For generating the bootable dvd image this script also needs
:*The content of a striped squashfs image found on the Kubuntu CD : ''/var/lmce-build/lite-installer/ubuntu-squashfs-base.tgz''
:*The content of a Kubuntu CD without the squashfs file: ''/var/lmce-build/lite-installer/ubutu-livecd.tgz''

== First Time Build ==
At this point you should already have the Kubuntu system installed and some basic knowledge of what each build script is doing. I recommend running the each script by hand for the first time and not use the ''build.sh'' or ''prepare.sh'' scripts. It will be a lot easer to debug problems this way.

===Preparation for the build===
This set of scripts should be run only once to prepare a Kubuntu system to act as a build server. The order is not so important for them but I recomend to stick with it. You'll need to run all the script as ''root'' as they will need write access in several directories.

* The next script will create the /etc/lmce-build configuration directory and copy all the default configuration files there, and create a symlink to Ubuntu_Helpers_NoHardcode from /usr/local/lmce-build. The default files are stored in the ''conf-files'' folder and spited other folders depending on release and architecture. You should check the ''install.sh'' script to see what it does this before running it.
cd Ubuntu_Helpers_NoHardcode ; ./install.sh ; cd /usr/local/lmce-build
NOTE: The mysql package setup will ask you to set a password, set this to a blank password for the build.sh script to work. You can also set this to a blank password later using ''mysqladmin -u root -p password ""''. This also means you should be careful in exposing the build machine to the internet.
* Install the build dependencies. Takes aprox. 30min depending on you internet connection speed. The packages that get installed are listed in ''/etc/lmce-build/build-packages'':

If you want only to be able to create linuxmce packages and create the standard CDs you can skip this steps. This steps are only needed for creating the DVD and involve some advanced skills as you must manually do most of the things here.

* Create the ''/var/lmce-build/lite-installer/ubuntu-livecd.tgz'' and ''/var/lmce-build/lite-installer/ubuntu-squashfs-base.tgz'' archives that are used as a base of the LinuxMCE DVD:
**'''ubuntu-livecd.tgz''': This is the simple one. It contains the all files from the kubnuntu dvd except for the squashfs image file. The steps to create this file are:
**#Mount the kubuntu cd
**#Copy the contents of the cd in a directory
**#Remove the squashfs image from the directory (casper/filesystem.squashfs)
**#Create a the tar.gz
**'''filesystem.squashfs''': You'll need to use the ''casper/filesystem.squashfs'' which you eliminate in creation of the previous tar.gz:
**#Mount the squashfs image in a directory
**#Copy the entire chroot content into another directory so you can modify it
**#Chroot in the new directory and uinstall all the x11/kde related packages
**#Exit the chroot and targz what is left of the unpacked squashfs image
* Create the vmware virtual machine and install vmware player:
**The build scripts expect a vmware virtual machine that can be started with vmware player. It's important for the disk image of the vmware machine to be in a 'flat' format, meaning that will not be splited in 2G files and all the disk space is allocated from the start, i use 15G virtual disks. Second, make sure that the network is set on nat. It's important the the virtual machine to be named 'Kubuntu'.
**Install a Kubuntu CD on the virtual machine.
**Copy the ssh public key (''/etc/lmce-build/builder.key.pub'') in the virtual machine and make sure that you can ssh using the private key from you system (''/etc/lmce-build/builder.key'') into root on you vmware machine.
**Add an entry in /etc/hosts with hostname 'vmware' and ip of your vmware machine
**Leave virtual machine powered up and shutdown vmware. This way the next time you start the virtual machine you will be able to login quickly with ssh on it.
**Copy all the files of the virtual machine in ''/var/Kubuntu''

== First Time Build ==
At this point you should already have the Kubuntu system installed and some basic knowledge of what each build script is doing. I recommend running the each script by hand for the first time and not use the ''build.sh'' or ''prepare.sh'' scripts. It will be a lot easer to debug problems this way.

This set of scripts should be run only once to prepare a Kubuntu system to act as a build server. The order is not so important for them but I recomend to stick with it. You'll need to run all the script as ''root'' as they will need write access in several directories.

* The next script will create the /etc/lmce-build configuration directory and copy all the default configuration files there, and create a symlink to Ubuntu_Helpers_NoHardcode from /usr/local/lmce-build. The default files are stored in the ''conf-files'' folder and spited other folders depending on release and architecture. You should check the ''install.sh'' script to see what it does this before running it.

**Copy the ssh public key (''/etc/lmce-build/builder.key.pub'') in the virtual machine and make sure that you can ssh using the private key from you system (''/etc/lmce-build/builder.key'') into root on you vmware machine.
**Add an entry in /etc/hosts with hostname 'vmware' and ip of your vmware machine
**Leave virtual machine powered up and shutdown vmware. This way the next time you start the virtual machine you will be able to login quickly with ssh on it.

With this tutorial I'll try to summarize the step involved in building the LinuxMCE CDs and DVDs together with some changes that I've done when switching from Kubuntu 0704 to Kubuntu 0710.

=== Saturday May 24 ===

Dan ("ddamron") arives at Berlin airport, and is picked up by Hari after some delay. Dan wanted to make sure he'd have no problem if he took his equipment back home again, which aparently confused some officials.

=== Sunday May 25 ===

Zaerc arrives late in the afternoon at the trainstation in Hamburg and is picked up by Possy ("posde"). They both ride to Berlin in the "possy-wagon" and are welcomed by Katrin and Hari into their home where Dan is also staying.

=== Monday May 26 ===

This day was mostly spent playing around with Hari's sytem at home while preparing and testing a lot of things we were going to use in the booth. Amongst others we:
* Played around with setting up MDs
* Checked in a template for the camera
* Tested several orbiters on mobile phones and nokia webpads.

=== Tuesday May 27 ===

Daniel ("danielk") arrives at the airport around 10am and is picked up by Hari, we all meet at Hari's house, before going to the convention center. After checking in and receiving our passes we arrive at the booth and start unloading the cars. We rearrange the furniture a bit and setup the hardware. Thom ("TSCHAK") arrives at the airport around 2pm and is picked up by Possy and Dan, together they return to the booth.

Since Hari had dropped the install DVD, we decided to install from CDs because Daniel has a Kubuntu live CD with him and the ISOs on his laptop. The install of linuxmce-0710 i386 took about an hour (after the kubuntu install). We ran into the problem that the Media Directors were recognized as AMD64. So Thom set them up manually as i386.

=== Wednseday May 28 ===

The first day of the show. Daniel finished setting up MythTV with DVB-t. Dan and Zaerc set up their laptops as extra Media Directors. Kaj ("|kr|") whom we know from the chatroom comes by as a visitor.

After the show closed at 6pm (for visitors at least) one of the major sponsors had arranged a tap with free beer. Lateron we went to dinner at a Vietnamese restaurant. Where Hari ordered a very "special" beer for Dan, who had enjoyed the free beer earlier just a little to much. And there was much rejoicing when, halfway through, Dan discovered his "special" beer was actually alcohol-free beer. Kaj joined us for dinner a bit later, he wanted to stay for the next days as well. Zaerc offered Kaj the fold-out couch in his appartment so he wouldn't have to sleep in his car.

Daniel had gotten us all tickets for the LinuxTag social gathering party, but strangely enough he didn't show up himself. There was lots of good food, cold drinks, interesting people, a band playing and a DJ afterwards.

At the end of the party Dan, Kaj and Hari decided to promote LMCE some more with a few wrestling demonstrations in a hallway with huge glass windows on both sides, fortunately nobody got hurt.

=== Friday May 30 ===

Michael ("m1ch43l") and Ladislav (also known from the chatroom) came by, and showed the beautiful new skin they're working on.

In the afternoon there were some hardware problems with the core involving the external ethernet port. So after some mucking about, we decide to continue without internet acces, since that is not really needed for the demonstrations anyway.

Possy won us an OpenMoko phone to use for development, after Zaerc made everyone enter in the competition where they gave them away. After that we closed the booth around 6pm and went to dinner, then straight to our sleeping quarters. Everybody was beat and glad to get an early night in.

=== Saturday May 31 ===

The core machine kept acting up so we ditched it and installed one of the Media directors as a Hybrid instead, problems solved. The DVDs to hand out have finaly arrived from Pluto. A decision is made to just hand them out left and right since it's the last day anyway.

There was a successful [http://www.linuxtag.org/2008/en/conf/events/vp-samstag/details.html?talkid=192 presentation by Daniel in the London room between 12am and 1pm], Dan was there to capture it on video. Suddenly we get a prize from the organization for having one of the best 2 booths at the show, a shiny new nokia810. Everybody is dead tired at the end of the afternoon, but we wait until closing time before packing everything up not to dissapoint the last visitors that came by. At 6pm we took everything down and moved most of it back to Hari's house. He stayed at home to get some rest while the rest of us went out to dinner. After Dinner Michael and Ladislav had to go home, and Possy was to tired to join us for drinks so he went for a nap in the posse-wagon.

The remaining party of Dan, Thom, Daniel, Jessie, Kaj and Zaerc went for some drinks in a place that Hari and Katrin had taken Dan earlier, it had a really nice alternative atmosphere. Some crazy things happened but we all enjoyed ourselves and had a really great time. Dan spent the night on the couch at Thom's appartment to give Hari some desperately needed alone time with Katrin.

Possy, Thom and Dan leave for Poland in the possy-wagon to visit Thom's girlfriend Quynh ("grebe"). Daniel and Jessie take off for a short vacation touring through Germany. And before driving home himself, Kaj drops Zaerc off at the central station of Berlin, from where Zaerc took the train back home.

The photo screen saver does a great job in ensuring that media is displayed on the Media Station screen at all times, even if you just happen to be listening to music.
By default, the photos come from flickr and are downloaded regularly to your local drive.

However, it is nice to use your own photos for the screen saver, either by themselves or alongside the flickr images.

In the current version it's possible to select photos for the screensaver easily.

All media on a LinuxMCE system is catalogued and stored in a database. The database allows for attributes to be stored for each media file.

One such attribute is "Screen Saver For MD". If this attribute is set for a picture, it will be used as one of the pictures for the Media Director Screen Saver. Pictures must be smaller than 1240x1240px.

Photos are selected by random from all the photos with the "Screen Saver For MD" attribute set.

There are a number of ways to set this attribute for individual files. They are;
* Setting an attribute from the web admin screens
* Setting an attribute from the command line
* Assigning a picture to the screen saver from the Orbiter

You will need to get to the command prompt of your CORE machine and from the command prompt (your default user should be fine) run:

There is functionality built into the system that allows an attribute to be set through a sequence of Command Messages sent directly to the right device. This is the method the flickr.pl script uses to assign the downloaded files the right attributes. The commands can be executed from anything that sends LinuxMCE messages (including the LinuxMCE Admin Website screens).

This method utilises the MessageSend utility available from the Linux command line. This method assumes that the file has already been sync'd with LinuxMCE and already exists in the database.

You will need to determine the full filename and path for the file you wish to set the attribute for.

*The first command queries the database for the file ID of a particular filename.
The second command assigns an attribute type/value to the returned file ID.

* Logon to your LinuxMCE Core and go to the Linux command prompt.
* Execute the following command:

Substitute the "full path to the file" where is says <pathtofile>. For example:

The number next to the '145:' is the important part. This is the fileID. If this is zero then your command has not found a match in the database and you may need to take other measures to ensure that the database is sync'd with your files.

Below is a simple script which takes all the jpg files in the current directory, resizes them
to a screensaver safe size, and then marks them as being usable by the screensaver. There is no error checking and it shrinks all the images in place, so make sure you make a copy of the images first and place them in another directory. Sounds like a good idea??? Unfortunately it is not currently possible, but I thought that this sounded like a logical thing to do so have put this placeholder in.

Essentially, screens in the Orbiter have buttons that trigger message Command to be sent. So setting up a button in the Picture view screen "add to Screen Saver" should be quite straight forward.

If you feel like getting involved maybe this is somewhere you can start.....

NOTE: Pictures must be smaller than 1240 x 1240. Hope this saves some a bit of fustration.

LinuxMCE was at the outset a fork of [[Pluto]]'s debian based [[Linux]] distribution for home automation. The founder of the LinuxMCE project, Paul Webber, contacted Pluto after seeing a demo of their software at a trade conference. The Pluto folks were happy to let Paul create his own Linux distribution using their foundation so long as he renamed the project. Since then LinuxMCE has moved from debian to Ubuntu (a debian based distribution), and is now moving from being primarily run by Paul alone to being a more open project all around.

[[Pluto]] allowed also us to import all their existing Wiki pages, including their [[Programmer's Guide|Programmer's Guide]]. The information is largely accurate for LinuxMCE as well and we've updated many of the parts that didn't apply to us since then.

When we shipped RC1 it happened to coincide with an Ubuntu release, this lead us to discover that we were missing a few debs in our deb cache. During testing and on any ordinary day these are just downloaded during the install; but when ubuntu's servers were under very heavy load, these downloads took a while to complete. If you already installed RC1 these packages were automatically downloaded during the install so you don't need the RC2 disc.

There are also minor changes in the ZWave Driver which is currently under active development. If you need these, can get these by simply installing the appropriate debian package:

'LinuxMCE 0710 Release Candidate 1' is the latest release. It has five installation options. There are two quick install DVD's, one containing 32-bit Intel/AMD binaries and the other containing 64-bit Intel/AMD binaries. These will both repartition and format the selected installation disk. There is also dual layer DVD available which can be used to upgrade an existing LinuxMCE 0704 install with 32-bit Intel/AMD binaries. Finally, there are two sets of two CD's to install LinuxMCE 0710 over an existing Ubuntu 0710 install, one set contains 32-bit Intel/AMD binaries and the other set contains 64-bit Intel/AMD binaries. The two CD install can take several hours to complete.
