A guy interested in setting up LinuxMCE and documenting it. Whether I am successful in either of those endeavors remains to be seen. *grins*

I am an IT security expert in another life. Ethical hacking, audits, consulting, infosec, regulatory compliance, that sort of thing.

I am quite familiar with Linux. I've run Linux as my primary home OS since April 2005. I switched over at work in 2007 after realizing that Cygwin wouldn't give me the same level of power. I've run RedHat, Fedora, Gentoo, and dabbled with Suse. I primarily run Ubuntu for desktop OS's. Trying out Ubuntu Server on a new hosted Xen VPS I've got.

Changed jobs recently so I'm back running WinXP as a primary work OS... what a jarring transition! After years of ease, going back to this piece of junk is giving me nightmares. What do you mean the window doesn't snap to the outline of the screen?!?!?!

Anyway, not a programmer, but I'm not a n00b either. I've done enough sysadmin, server, networking, desktop, and hacking work that I can find my way around if I need to. And I understand the basics.

I hope to help with feedback, testing, and system integration tasks.

I see myself having a whole-house LMCE setup. That means a seamless TV/media experience in the kitchen, den, bedroom, outdoors, and possibly more. Intelligent VoIP allowing calls between rooms, separate voicemail boxes, and call forwarding. All components are using as little power as possible. All components integrate seamlessly with the system. It is expansion-ready, to allow me to add in cable/satellite/netflix/other boxes. The system should impress, not because it's flashy and in-your-face, but because of its low-key, seamless integration with the house.

I want it all. Really. The convergence aspects of LMCE appeal to me '''greatly'''. To that end, my goals are:

* I want to be able to watch good TV shows at any time.
* I want surround sound.
* I don't want to futz with discs more than twice (load into system, and put away in CD/DVD binder).
* I want to go to sleep at night, knowing that my doors are locked, the alarm is armed, and my motorized gate is closed.
* I want to be able to check the security of my home from anywhere.
* I want to be able to "down-shift" my home into lower energy consumption when I am traveling.
* I want devices that will interface directly with LMCE as possible.
* I want to be able to show artwork.

Hide it!!! I want as little visible or showing as possible in my den. Ideally, you could see nothing but the TV and maybe an optical drive for CD/DVD/BR, a USB plug for media on sticks, and a card reader for media on cards.

== Orbiter ==
I've got a woefully underpowered Asus Tansformer TF301T that I use as a sort of Orbiter to control my ChromeCast. But a nice 7" tablet with qOrbiter on a stand on my end table would be the end goal.

== TV ==
I'd like the TV mounted on the wall. Art would display on the TV when not in use.

== Amp/Receiver ==
I want surround sound, but I don't want a cabinet full of amps or a receiver that can do 1,000 things but 999 are useless due to LinuxMCE!

What I WANT is a decent DAC (in the MD or external) and a Class D amp that will power all of my speakers. Maybe I'll have a powered sub, maybe not.

Unfortunately, the best I can find are small 2-channel Class D amps that are the size of a pack of playing cards. To make that work I'll need 3 packs. While that's not big, it's bigger than it needs to be due to the redundant power circuits, power plugs, and cases. *le sigh*

I've had the components for this for a year, but haven't moved on it. For this, as well as for many other parts of the LMCE system, I first need an accurate house layout. Do you know how hard it is to find a Linux program to do this easily and to scale?

I have one keypad now, which I want to place near the back door. A future keypad might go well in the master bedroom.

The panel (brains) of the system should go in the wiring closet, because that's where it's most secure. It also makes the most sense to put it there. This means that I need to wait for the planning of the closet to be completed before I can install the alarm system.

I bought a Honeywell Vista 20P alarm system with the express intent of hooking it up to a [[VistaICM]]. And then I find out that it's been discontinued. Well, I'm pretty sure the Vista series panels haven't been discontinued, so I'm hoping that a replacement will come out or that there are some still lying around somewhere.

Oooh, update, 5/24/2011! Someone out there has a controller designed to talk to the Honeywell Vista system and take the place of the VistaICM. [http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=11383.0 Forum posts] are dated 2/2011. I don't know if the software was written, but the device exists!

If not, I'll either limit them to the main things I want LMCE to control, or find some other alternative like Z-Wave lighting control.

A guy interested in setting up LinuxMCE and documenting it. Whether I am successful in either of those endeavors remains to be seen. *grins*

I am an IT security expert in another life. Ethical hacking, audits, consulting, infosec, regulatory compliance, that sort of thing.

I am quite familiar with Linux. I've run Linux as my primary home OS since April 2005. I switched over at work in 2007 after realizing that Cygwin wouldn't give me the same level of power. I've run RedHat, Fedora, Gentoo, and dabbled with Suse. I primarily run Ubuntu for desktop OS's. Trying out Ubuntu Server on a new hosted Xen VPS I've got.

Changed jobs recently so I'm back running WinXP as a primary work OS... what a jarring transition! After years of ease, going back to this piece of junk is giving me nightmares. What do you mean the window doesn't snap to the outline of the screen?!?!?!

Anyway, not a programmer, but I'm not a n00b either. I've done enough sysadmin, server, networking, desktop, and hacking work that I can find my way around if I need to. And I understand the basics.

I hope to help with feedback, testing, and system integration tasks.

Like most people, I've heard of things like Squeezebox. But I've never really paid attention. That's because I stop listening as soon as I find out the limitations. "Move your TV viewing from room A to room B." Or maybe "listen to your computer's audio on your TV."

That's unacceptable to me. I want to be able to move '''any media''' from '''anywhere''' to '''anywhere'''. I've looked into this for years and always wondered why special cable runs, coax, and expensive channel modulators were required. Being a nerd, I thought it would make sense to solve the problem by throwing the bits onto an IP network. I've seen point-to-point solutions--get the data from one device to another--but always the switching and other limitations made them too bothersome.

Enter a post from Scott Adams, the creator of Dilbert. On his blog, he posted that he wanted something similar. People threw out lots of ideas, and one of them was Pluto. From there, I came here.

A system that can accept media played at any location, and shuttle it to any other location. Finally! And it will catalogue and play my digital media as well? Brilliant! I can rack everything and be as minimalist as I like in my living room, but if I wind up needing a set-top box anyway, the system can handle that without trouble. I'm sold.

Security is an illusion. It's not a boolean state--on or off, secure or insecure. It's relative. Relative to the value of the thing(s) you're trying to protect, but also relative to the security around you. Kind of like two men with a bear chasing them, I don't have to make my house the most secure house around, it just has to be more secure than my neighbors'.

As I said before, I am a security expert. Information security, but still. I've used bump keys. There's video of 12-year-old girls using bump keys successfully. And then there's the lockpicking "obstacle course" at one con, where teens and youngsters compete at opening the most different kinds of locks in the shortest overall time.

So this is where my conundrum comes... I have been wanting a set of good, bump-proof locks for my house. And then I find Z-Wave-based door locks. Two brands--Schlage and Kwikset. I haven't investigated them very well yet, but I know that Kwikset has no bump-proof locks, at last check. I know Schlage does, but not across their entire line.

So I'm torn... do I defend against the unlikely, but [http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/class_break class-breaking] bump key? Or do I go for the ease and peace-of-mind that comes with being able to automatically lock my whole house down whenever I leave?

A Web Orbiter is any device (such as a iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, laptop, PC, etc.) that accesses the Orbiter user interface (UI) through a Web browser.

The new Web Orbiter 2.0 has been re-written from the ground up to make sure it has a much smoother performance overall but especially on slower lower powered devices and devices that are connected over slow LAN connections or even slower external connections...such as a Mobile 3G network or slow WiFi connection.

So what has changed? Well visually your Orbiter UI will look like it does on your existing standard Orbiters but you will notice that unlike the original Web Orbiter the new 2.0 version does not refresh every 5 secs. The new Web Orbiter now only updates if something changes in the system and that requires the UI screen you are currently viewing to be updated or if you click on a UI button or other UI element and that causes a screen update.

To achieve this the proxy_orbiter has been updated so that it sets a flag called 'ANYNEWS' to 'true' if some element of the current displayed screen has been updated. The Web Orbiter makes a light weight call to query the state of this flag once every second and only gets an updated UI screen if the flag is set to 'true' otherwise no screen update is requested. So in use the new Web Orbiter 2.0 behaves in a very similar fashion to the Orbiter on one of your MD's - and now it even performs with a similar performance level too.

Whats a proxy_orbiter? Proxy_orbiter runs on the Core and its job is to render the UI for the Web Orbiter that is running remotely on some other device. Each Web Orbiter has an associated proxy_orbiter and the two work in partnership. Proxy_orbiters do all the 'heavy lifting' rendering the UI and this allows the remote device that is running the Web Orbiter to be much less powerful and very simple devices indeed if needed.

Another change in the new 2.0 Web Orbiter is that screen refreshes are double buffered so that the new Web Orbiter receives the new screen update from your Core in the background and only redraws the screen when it has the complete image stored in memory - this makes the update process smoother and faster.

The overall effect of all these changes is to vastly improve the performance and usability while at the same time reducing the processing overhead of the Web Orbiter massively.

== Setup ==
The procedure to setup a Web Orbiter is simple but the order of steps is important.
#First of all, add a new Generic Web Device as a Child Device for your Core:
##Goto the LinuxMCE Admin website--> Pull down Advanced --> Configuration --> Devices --> This shows the devices tree on the left window --> click CORE. The CORE's detail page should appear.
##Click 'Create Child Device'.
##In the Description, enter the name of the specific web orbiter.
##In the Add child device window, click the button 'Pick device template'. The new pop-up window containing device templates will be opened.
##In the 'Device Category' dropdown list, choose 'Peripherals'.
##In the 'Device Template' dropdown list, find and select "Generic Web Device" (or just type the template id: 1748 and press go).
##Click the button 'Pick Device Template'. The Add Child Device Window will close, and the Generic Web Device will be added to the Core, as the updated Device Tree will show.
##A new Generic Proxy Orbiter will also be created automatically. Watch the Orbiter generation process on the Orbiters page: Wizard-->Devices-->Orbiters.
#Wait till the Orbiter generation procedure finishes. A message on an active Orbiter or on the Orbiter page will indicate when it has completed.
#Set the appropriate screen resolution to suit the device your Web Orbiter is intended for from the 'Size' drop down
#Set the 'Skin' drop down to the skin you want to use (normally this would mean the UI1 Standard Variation or a derivative)
#Click on your new Generic Proxy Orbiter in the device tree, give it a unique name and then scroll to the bottom of the page on the right and look for the field called 'Listen Port'. This field will be set to '3461' by default (if this Web Orbiter is not your first then you should increment this value by one ie to '3462' - each Web Orbiter must have a unique 'Listen Port' number)
#Now click the 'Save' button at the bottom of the screen to save the changes you have made.
#Now do a 'Full Regen' from the 'Wizard - Orbiters' page (use the 'Full Regen' for the specific Web Orbiter you have created and not the overall 'Full Regen' button at the top of the page). Next when the Regen has completed do a "[[Quick reload router]]". Otherwise, the Web Orbiter won't work properly.

If the 'Device' your planning to use your Web Orbiter on is a Desktop or Laptop then use the biggest resolution that will comfortably fit onto your screen. If your device is a touch screen device like an iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch then choose a resoltion that matches the overall resolution of the devices display; '''Do Not use 16:9'''

The iPad has a screen resolution of 1024x768 so if your creating an Orbiter for the iPad this is the resolution you should select for this Web Orbiter.

===iPhone (pre iPhone 4) or iPad Touch===
The iPhone/iPod Touch have a screen resolution of 480x320 so if your creating an Orbiter for either of these this is the resolution you should select for this Web Orbiter.

===iPhone 4===
The iPhone 4 has a screen resolution of 960x640 so if your creating an Orbiter for the iPhone 4 this is the resolution you should select for this Web Orbiter.

===Google Nexus One or HTC Desire (Android)===
If you have a Nexus One you will need to select a resolution of 480x800 (select N770 in the web admin, it is 480x800) so if your creating an Orbiter for the Nexus One this is the resolution you should select for this Web Orbiter.

On the HTC Desire you might also have to go into the web browser settings and change the default zoom to "far away" (mine is danish, so don't know the exact english decription). After that it should be full screen.

===Nokia 5800 XpressMusic===
For a fullscreen orbiter, iPhone resolution 480x320 works quite well. For a screen that's full width (but requires some vertical scrolling), 640x480 (Standard TV) works well. This resolution allows for easier reading of some orbiter buttons, without the need for zooming in.

===Nintendo DSi===
Best screen resolution, 480x320 so far. Lower resolutions may work well also with "Mobile Phone Basic" skin applied.

The skin "Mobile Phone Basic" is OK readable on the HTC Desire at 480x800.

iPhone/iPod Touch - The "Basic" skin works well. The Titanium skins should also work ok although might be a little bit harder to make out text in file lists etc. "Mobile Phone Basic" isn't a good choice as it is missing a few buttons (eg. Random in the remote) as it was designed for devices with hardware buttons. Once you load up the web-orbiter on your iPhone the Safari 'menu' bars get in the way a bit. This can be overcome by hitting the '+' symbol on the bottom bar and adding an icon to your home screen. This will then open up with only the 'status' bar at the top.

KlfJoat: Added a bit of a bio

A guy interested in setting up LinuxMCE and documenting it. Whether I am successful in either of those endeavors remains to be seen. *grins*

I am an IT security expert in another life. Ethical hacking, audits, consulting, infosec, regulatory compliance, that sort of thing.

I am quite familiar with Linux. I've run Linux as my primary home OS since April 2005. I switched over at work in 2007 after realizing that Cygwin wouldn't give me the same level of power. I've run RedHat, Fedora, Gentoo, and dabbled with Suse. I primarily run Ubuntu for desktop OS's. Trying out Ubuntu Server on a new hosted Xen VPS I've got.

Changed jobs recently so I'm back running WinXP as a primary work OS... what a jarring transition! After years of ease, going back to this piece of junk is giving me nightmares. What do you mean the window doesn't snap to the outline of the screen?!?!?!

Anyway, not a programmer, but I'm not a n00b either. I've done enough sysadmin, server, networking, desktop, and hacking work that I can find my way around if I need to. And I understand the basics.

I hope to help with feedback, testing, and system integration tasks.

Intelligent VoIP allowing calls between rooms, separate voicemail boxes, and call forwarding. All components are using as little power as possible. All components integrate seamlessly with the system. It is expansion-ready, to allow me to add in cable/satellite/netflix/other boxes. The system should impress, not because it's flashy and in-your-face, but because of its low-key, seamless integration with the house.

* I want devices that will interface directly with LMCE as possible.

== Racks ==
One question I currently have [http://forum.linuxmce.org/index.php?topic=10959.0 out in the forum] is about what it's best to use to house equipment in the wiring closet. I come from the IT world, where professional-grade equipment is used. I'm obviously familiar and comfortable with it. I've seen these Leviton-style panels, and they seem so limited and small.

I remember reading somewhere that using racks in home automation setups is frowned upon when reselling a house. The term used was "intimidating". However, a pretty panel coupled with UPS's, servers, cable modems, and wireless AP's on the floor, all their cabling strewn everywhere seems intimidating to me. I'm wondering if a hybrid approach may be useful.

== Miscellaney ==
The choice of which closet to use is a given. It is big enough, I don't use it, and it is entirely interior. Two drawbacks are that it is not centrally located, and that it is in the bedroom portion of the house.

Preparing the closet is important. This space is big, but I don't want to overrun it completely. It would be nice if it could remain a closet for resale or my own use.

There is no direct airflow into the closet. This could become a problem. I am hoping that a simple, small, quiet exhaust fan will suffice. Think something that turns on when too hot, and vents to the attic. If this doesn't work, then I will enlarge the hole and tie in a duct to the AC.

A light would be helpful in this space. I don't think there is one, currently.

== Control Systems ==
A page at MisterHouse seem to have [http://misterhouse.wikispaces.com/Insteon a considered, if dated, comparison of Insteon, Z-Wave, and UPB]. It leans more toward Insteon. However, with a system like LinuxMCE which abstracts the control protocol from the user interface, it is possible to choose the best protocol for each individual control job.

I looked through a SmartHome mailer last night. It was my first glimpse since seriously deciding to create a LMCE system. I realize that's a biased source, but I have some specific wants that Insteon seems to address. Most notably, the multi-button control panels throughout the house, and controlled outlets without the wall plugs.
