Most analog cameras will work with a [[:Category:Video_Capture_Boards|video capture board/card]]. There is usually a power/connector panel to which the cameras connect in a wired solution (e.g. power-over-Ethernet), with RCA or BNC connectors for video output.

Cables connect the camera outputs to the video capture board/card, which is usually housed in the LinuxMCE Core server PC.

Examples of analog camera brands are Greyfox, Smarthome, and Lorex.

==Setup==

This requires an interface device. LinuxMCE includes the device [[Motion|Motion Wrapper]], which is a wrapper for the open source project [http://www.lavrsen.dk/twiki/bin/view/Motion/WebHome Motion]. It will technically be the interface device (even though the video capture board is the hardware interface). The Motion software monitors the video capture board for you.
*In LinuxMCE Admin-->Wizard-->Devices-->Interfaces-->add device "Motion Wrapper" from the category "Surveillance Video Interfaces", then click the "Pick device template" button.
*In LinuxMCE Admin-->Wizard-->Devices-->Surveillance Cameras-->add device "Generic Analog Camera" from the category "Peripherals"-->"Surveillance Cameras" for each camera. This includes analog cameras you have connected to a video capture board, as well as USB cams and web cams. Then click the "Pick device template" button. Choose the "Controlled Via" device to be the motion wrapper.
:* For each camera you will need to specify a number in the parameter "Port/Channel Number".
::* If you have only one camera, put a 1.
::* If you have several cameras connected to a single multi-port capture card, the number for each camera should correspond to the port number on the card.
::* If you have a mixture it may require some experimenting to see which camera gets mapped to which port. For example, if you have two 4-port capture cards, and you call the 8 cameras "Cams 1-8", and 1 USB camera, which you call "Living Room cam" cam, there will be a total of 9 cameras. The order is determined by the drivers. Normally USB cameras come first. So try giving the USB camera "Living Room cam" a port 1, and then the 4 cameras on the first capture card port #2-5, and the 4 cameras on the second capture card #6-9. Later when you are viewing the cameras if you find the port numbers are incorrect you may need to re-arrange them. If, for example, you go to view the camera you called "Living Room Cam" and see that it is really showing you another camera, go back and change the port parameter until each camera is correct.

==Troubleshooting==

If you have an older usb camera that doesn't show a picture, try to change the following settings in webadmin. You will have to reboot the core, just restarting the motion wrapper doesn't work

Virtualization is a good way to take LinuxMCE for a test drive before spending any money on new hardware, or running a virtual core to serve multiple media directors without dedicating a new machine. USB and serial devices are accessible to a virtual machine so USB-UIRT and other popular devices should be usable (note pci cards cannot be use in a virtual machine as of yet). Another advantage is the ability to save working LinuxMCE setups (snapshots) which you can revert to in case you break your LMCE install.

At this point you will only have Software rendering which is very slow and laggy, to get better performance do the following
rm /usr/lib/libGL.so.1
ln -s /usr/lib/nvidia/libGL.so.1.2.xlibmesa /usr/lib/libGL.so.1
After this reboot the machine and it should be fairly smooth

==Whats does it do?==
Squeezeslave basically makes it possible to add additional 'virtual' Squeezeboxes to your Core or MD's just by adding additional sound-cards. Each Squeezeslave/Sound-card combo uses about 4-5% CPU on an ATOM/Ion based MD. We have tested an ATOM/Ion based MD running 3 x Squeezeslave/Sound-Card combo's while playing a ripped DVD from the Core without any problems at all. Using Squeezeslave/Sound-Card combo's makes it possible to have several independent audio outputs from your Core or from an MD allowing you to use the 2nd Zone of your Surround Amp for example to provide audio to an adjoining room eg a bathroom or maybe a kitchen. All of this expands the options you have when designing your system, gives you enormous additional flexibility to locate additional audio sources where you need them, and reduces the energy footprint of your system at the same time (in comparison to adding additional physical Squeezeboxes).

==Squeezeslave Setup==
Here's how to setup squeezeslave to run on your core or in fact any of your MD's. It's fairly straight forward but currently requires manual config/install of each Squeezeslave - I'm working on making this something you can just configure from Web Admin simply and quickly. One small issue is that because squeezeslave uses the OSS interface, you will need a separate sound card for each instance of squeezeslave you want to run.

==Hardware Supported==
The Startech Virtual 7.1 USB Audio Adapter (model No. ICUSBAUD107) works fine. This tiny USB Stick style adapter works perfectly under 7.10, 9.10 & 10.04. No installation...just plug it in and its ready a few secs later. Only stereo out jack and Mic input jack.

Many other brands of USB Audio adapter will probably work too. Please add your experiences with other working hardware here too.

===Setting Up Squeezeslave on your Core or MD's===
If you want to setup Squeezeslave on your Core then either open Konsole session from the KDE Desktop or ssh in from another machine and sudo yourself. If you want to set up Squeezeslave on an MD then ssh into your Core and then use;

ssh moonNNN (**where NNN is the ID number of the MD you want to ssh into.)

You can find the ID of your MD from the Web Admin page at Wizard->Devices->Media Directors and the ID is the number with a '#' in front of it at the top of each MD section. Now follow the instructions below for each MD you want to add Squeezeslave too.

* the -o option specifies which output device ie /dev/dsp1 (check with "squeezeslave -L" for available devices then use '-oN' where 'N' is the number next to your output device)

I am using the No.18 device in the output above and therefore would use '-o18' switch when using the squeezeslave command.

The Squeezebox Server address defaults to 127.0.0.1.
Options:
-h, --help: Prints this message.
-a, Sets the amplitude of a high-frequency tone
--predelay_amplitude <val>: produced during the predelay (see --predelay).
The frequency is set at the source's sampling
rate/2 and the amplitude is in absolute value.
For 16-bit sources, the max is 32767, but values
below 10 are likely to work. The goal is to
produce an inaudible signal that will cause DACs
to wake-up and lock before actual samples are

Squeezeslave basically makes it possible to add additional 'virtual' Squeezeboxes to your Core or MD's just by adding additional sound-cards. Each Squeezeslave/Sound-card combo uses about 4-5% CPU on an ATOM/Ion based MD. We have tested an ATOM/Ion based MD running 3 x Squeezeslave/Sound-Card combo's while playing a ripped DVD from the Core without any problems at all. Using Squeezeslave/Sound-Card combo's makes it possible to have several independent audio outputs from your Core or from an MD allowing you to use the 2nd Zone of your Surround Amp for example to provide audio to an adjoining room eg a bathroom or maybe a kitchen. All of this expands the options you have when designing your system, gives you enormous additional flexibility to locate additional audio sources where you need them, and reduces the energy footprint of your system at the same time (in comparison to adding additional physical Squeezeboxes).

==Squeezeslave Setup==
Here's how to setup squeezeslave to run on your core or in fact any of your MD's. It's fairly straight forward but currently requires manual config/install of each Squeezeslave - I'm working on making this something you can just configure from Web Admin simply and quickly. One small issue is that because squeezeslave uses the OSS interface, you will need a separate sound card for each instance of squeezeslave you want to run.

==Hardware Supported==
The Startech Virtual 7.1 USB Audio Adapter (model No. ICUSBAUD107) works fine. This tiny USB Stick style adapter works perfectly under 7.10, 9.10 & 10.04. No installation...just plug it in and its ready a few secs later. Only stereo out jack and Mic input jack.

Many other brands of USB Audio adapter will probably work too. Please add your experiences with other working hardware here too.

===Setting Up Squeezeslave on your Core or MD's===
If you want to setup Squeezeslave on your Core then either open Konsole session from the KDE Desktop or ssh in from another machine and sudo yourself. If you want to set up Squeezeslave on an MD then ssh into your Core and then use;

ssh moonNNN (**where NNN is the ID number of the MD you want to ssh into.)

You can find the ID of your MD from the Web Admin page at Wizard->Devices->Media Directors and the ID is the number with a '#' in front of it at the top of each MD section. Now follow the instructions below for each MD you want to add Squeezeslave too.

Got two Zotac ION ITX C-U boards, connected one to my LCD TV and set it up for PXE boot, this works out of the box, i got the black screen when the AVwizard should come up, pressed the number "3" and there it was.
I choose hdmi2, 1080p, 60hz and it works fine.

Sound over Hdmi works great in the latest snapshot, only one cable needed to connect your MD

The only thing I always see, is that you have to restart your MD completely after the whole installation is done. You'll get a black screen otherwise. After restart everything is fine.

Also looking at other possibilities, especially cheap but performing for e.g. the bedroom TV's that don't require 1080p, I can't see the difference anyway between 720p and 1080p. But if it's possible it will be fine and future proof.

Bought a windows vista MCE remote, this was plug and play with mceusb2 selected, mceusb will not work with these vista remotes.

I have 2 WebDT 366's which work great with Tschak's image, even after re-installs it's easy to add them back in. Awesome orbiter. I will probably use these as fixed orbiters on the wall somewhere since battery life isn't the greatest.

I am also very interested in the 2440 all in one boards, which would be perfect to put in place of the current intercom system for fixed orbiters around the house.

LinuxMCE does not talk directly to a USB camera. Instead, an intermediate script called [[Motionwrapper]] constantly captures images from the camera, detecting motion and saving the images and AVI-timelapse videos.

==Troubleshooting==

You may have to ensure that you have the correct driver for your USB camera. That process is beyond the scope of this document. The gspca driver supports over 200 cameras however, and is included in the current linux-header package. Therefore, many cameras will work automatically.

You may need a symlink from /lib/modules/2.6.x.x-pluto-2-686/build to /usr/src/linux-headers-2.6.x.x-pluto-2-686. This assumes that your device driver creates a /dev/videox file. In addition your webcam might create a /dev/audiox using the snd-usb-audio driver.

===No Picture===

Sometimes you still get no picture with older cameras, you can try the following

Under the motion wrapper there are Motion Parameters... try changing the resolution to a lower resolution for older webcams they might not support 640x480 (default) so make it 320x240.

Also these parameters seem to help get a picture if nothing can be seen.

snapshot_interval 2

You will have to reboot your core after this, just restarting motion didn't help

Got two Zotac ION ITX C-U boards, connected one to my LCD TV and set it up for PXE boot, this works out of the box, i got the black screen when the AVwizard should come up, pressed the number "3" and there it was.

Sound over Hdmi works great in the latest snapshot, only one cable needed to connect your MD

The only thing I always see, is that you have to restart your MD completely after the whole installation is done. You'll get a black screen otherwise. After restart everything is fine.

Also looking at other possibilities, especially cheap but performing for e.g. the bedroom TV's that don't require 1080p, I can't see the difference anyway between 720p and 1080p. But if it's possible it will be fine and future proof.

= Linux commands =

This wiki is for the many of us out there that are new to linux and don't know the general commands used to find/edit/troublehoot. It also describes a lot of regularly used files for troublehooting. I will just use the core in my examples, but you can do this for any md also.

==logging into a terminal you core or md==
a lot of troubleshooting is done from a terminal, which is different than a windows or kde environment
*on the core/hybrid itself press ctrl-alt-f1 for what i call terminal 1, you can also use f2, f3 or f4 and have 4 terminals open at the same time
*from a windows box download putty which is a free ssh (secure shell) program to telnet into your core/hybrid

**open the program and for the core/hybrid use 192.168.80.1 for the Host Name (or IP address) and click the 'Open' button
You are now in a command terminal on your MD

==becoming root==
for most of the changes you want to make or installing new software you have to become 'root' (equivalent to administrator in win)
*if you are worried about messing stuff up, just use the 'sudo' command to become root just for that command, this is generally recommended for novice users of linux
**kubuntu will ask you for a password when you do, enter the password you used to setup the first account while installing kubuntu. kubuntu will only ask you for your password once per session===
*if you want to become 'root' and stay that way use the 'sudo -i' command and answer the password
You are now root on the system or can use a command as root

==viewing and editing files==
for this example i'll use your video setup file xorg.conf
*location /etc/X11/xorg.conf
this file is used to store all your videocard settings, a lot of simple fixes can be made in here like changing the driver from vesa to nvidia and vice versa.

*To view you xorg.conf just use the 'cat' command:
cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf

To edit xorg.conf use any of the editors available, in kubuntu 'vi' is always available, i use 'nano'
*if you don't have nano, you can use the following command to install it
sudo apt-get install nano
*after installing nano, just use:
nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf to edit the file
you can now view and edit your xorg.conf, ofcourse you can use these same commands to view/edit any other file

==Checking versions of installed software==
With this command you can check the versions of the software installed
dkpg -l

Ofcourse getting this whole list is difficult to navigate, and you can ask for only one piece as follows, for this example mythtv is used
dpkg -l | grep mythtv

This should give you a list like this with only the mythtv versions:

As you can see this system is running mythtv version 0.21.0 (the vdpau2 gives away it's also using the avenard depot)

==Getting a missing key for a certain package==
In the latest install the md's medibuntu package key was not set correctly, which gives an error on apt-get update, you can correct this by typing the following.
wget http://packages.medibuntu.org/medibuntu-key.gpg
sudo apt-key add medibuntu-key.gpg
This should add the key to your package manager, do another apt-get update and you should get no errors

==Changing root password for an MD==

Figure out the device number of your MD when it was created.
On the Core/Hybrid start a terminal ctrl-alt-f1 and login with your login and password you used when you installed kubuntu.
Become root as above sudo -i and put in the password again.
Now navigate to /usr/pluto/diskless/ and look this directory, it should have a number in there that is the same as your md.
Now type chroot ## (where ## is the number of the md device)
type passwd
it asks you to put a new root password in twice, do it and the root password for that md is changed.
type exit or just go back to lmce by keystroke ctrl-alt-f7

This is a start and i will be adding to this wiki while i figure out commands on kubuntu and while troubleshooting, please feel free to add your commands at any time

**kubuntu will ask you for a password when you do, enter the password you used to setup the first account while installing kubuntu. kubuntu will only ask you for your password once per session===

==viewing and editing files==
for this example i'll use your video setup file xorg.conf
*location /etc/X11/xorg.conf
this file is used to store all your videocard settings, a lot of simple fixes can be made in here like changing the driver from vesa to nvidia and vice versa.

*To view you xorg.conf just use the 'cat' command:
cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf

To edit xorg.conf use any of the editors available, in kubuntu 'vi' is always available, i use 'nano'
*if you don't have nano, you can use the following command to install it
sudo apt-get install nano
*after installing nano, just use:
nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf to edit the file
you can now view and edit your xorg.conf, ofcourse you can use these same commands to view/edit any other file

==Checking versions of installed software==
With this command you can check the versions of the software installed
dkpg -l

Ofcourse getting this whole list is difficult to navigate, and you can ask for only one piece as follows, for this example mythtv is used
dpkg -l | grep mythtv

This should give you a list like this with only the mythtv versions:

==Getting a missing key for a certain package==
In the latest install the md's medibuntu package key was not set correctly, which gives an error on apt-get update, you can correct this by typing the following.
wget http://packages.medibuntu.org/medibuntu-key.gpg
sudo apt-key add medibuntu-key.gpg
This should add the key to your package manager, do another apt-get update and you should get no errors

Ever had problems with your MTU being set to 576 on eth0 because of you ISP or other reasons. You can fix that.

you can check your mtu settings with the terminal command:
ifconfig eth#
where eth# is the nic you are trying to affect in my case this was eth0

Realtime you can open a terminal and use:
sudo ifconfig eth0 mtu ####
The #### is the number of the mtu you want to use in my case 1500, so the realtime command would be: sudo ifconfig eth0 mtu 1500

Ofcourse if you reboot or the network gets restarted it will change to 576 again, so to make it permanent we have to edit some files, in particular the /etc/network/interfaces file.

/etc/network/interfaces looks like this for a normal core on linuxmce:

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp
auto eth1
iface eth1 inet static
address 192.168.80.1
netmask 255.255.255.0

So eth0 is getting it's ip from your isp through dhcp and therefor also the mtu setting
Eth1 is getting a static ip that's provided.

Now the changes you want to make to make sure the mtu is 1500 for everything are the following....

For the dhcp eth0 you need to add a line telling the nic to set the mtu at 1500 which looks like this
post-up /sbin/ifconfig $IFACE mtu 1500

For the static eth1 it's easier and you can add a line telling the mtu to be 1500 (or whatever you like, you can experiment with your internal network for better package handling, i've heard up to 9000, but this is up to you)
mtu 1500

Your interfaces file should now look something like this:

Got two Zotac ION ITX C-U boards, connected one to my LCD TV and set it up for PXE boot, booted up just fine. I followed the ZOTAC wiki and chose UI1 at 1st boot. Installed the Avanard Repo 180.60 nvidia drivers, I got a opengl error, had to manually set the xorg.conf to 'nvidia'. After this it started up great in any resolution.
Going to try the newest nvidia drivers on the other board, nvidia 190.18

Setup my second Zotac ION ITX C-U board, connected it to our Sony Receiver that is connected to our DLP TV and set it up for PXE boot. After image was done, I had a "Failed to setup X" which is normal since i used a HDMI cable to connect, i manually set the driver to vesa and could go through the AV wizard this time, used UI1 again for first boot and it worked. This time I installed the Nvidia 190.32 drivers and re-ran the AV Wizard. Somehow i would get a blank screen when selecting "1" (HDMI/DVI), but "3" (Component) worked, strange but it works fine in 720p now.

I will try 1080p when my Gigabit switch and nic for the core comes in.

Got the boards at Newegg, they had them with a $25 rebate att, great deal for these great boards.

The only thing I always see, is that you have to restart your MD completely after the whole installation is done. You'll get a grey screen otherwise. After restart everything is fine.

Still waiting for full vdpau integration, but it seems to do great in all resolutions.

Also looking at other possibilities, especially cheap but performing for e.g. the bedroom TV's that don't require 1080p, I can't see the difference anyway between 720p and 1080p. But if it's possible it will be fine and future proof.

Delete all lines past eth1, leave the eth1 line and make it look as follows:

You can find your vendor and device ID by looking in /sys/class/net/eth#/device.

This will "lock" your nforce NIC to eth1. After this edit I had no problems with my network cards.

It worked OOTB, but... to get the video to play smooth you have to install the latest nvidia drivers, 185.18.14 at the moment I write this. After this everything played nicely with UI2-alpha blending.

This Asus motherboard has 2 Sata connectors and hooked up the SSD to the Primary and made sure the jumper was set to enable SATA, installation was no problem.

Video, Sound and drive are all up and running.

Network needed a small tweak, the nforce 'forcedeth' seems to want to add a different MAC for this card each time you start up and increases the eth# accordingly which messes things up for the internal network (i'm using this nic for internal), you can get past this by editing the /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net-rules.
