The QNAP TS-409 Pro is a 4-bay, hot-swappable, Linux embedded All-in-one NAS (Network Attached Storage) Server specifically designed for business users who need fast performance, mass storage, and useful server features. Adopting 500MHz CPU and 256MB DDRII large-sized memory, it fully enhances the performance and breaks through the deficiencies of other traditional NAS models. Advanced RAID configurations for non-stop service are also supported. RAID 5 is a widely adopted configuration for highly economic data protection that allows one drive failure with the system running. RAID 6 allows the failure of maximum two drives to offer business a more advanced data protection.
Additional Features
The TS-409 Pro supports multiple file sharing protocols for users to share files across Linux, Unix, Mac, and Windows platforms. Abundant valuable server functions including File Server, FTP Server, and Printer Server, etc., are supported to satisfy the business needs. Windows AD (Active Directory) is supported to help create an easy-to-access environment and lower the maintenance cost. With the dual support of MySQL and SQLite, SMB & SOHO users can easily set up their own web and database servers. Also, encrypted remote replication and backup to external devices are supported to enhance data protection. Various data storage and management mechanisms- FTP server with SSL/TLS encrypted technology, SSH login, and web page SSL login enable users to transfer, store, and share data securely.
Setup
Using the QNAP's web-based admin page, configure the QNAP to accept a DHCP address. There are several default shares and these suit most users.
LinuxMCE Device Configuration
- Plug the unit into the linuxmce network and linuxmce will find it for you. It will ask you if you want to access each share in sequence. Depending on the number of users you can either make the data public or specify a user for each of the default shares. Apart from that there is very little that needs to be done in Linuxmce or the QNAP TS-409/pro to get it to work.
Misc
Whilst the QNAP boasts a bucket load of features, i have not yet tested them all under windows. I also consider the product to be reasonably priced in comparision to other similar NAS solutions and based on my experience to date with it - i consider it money well spent.
