Personal Computing

  • The KDE desktop (Kubuntu) can be accessed on a Media Director in two ways
  • A button on the Orbiter menu can be used to bring up the KDE desktop.
  • Press CTRL-ALT-F7 to bring up the Kubuntu desktop. Press CTRL-ALT-F11 to return to LinuxMCE.
  • Every LinuxMCE Media Director has a full OS built-in. Today's high-def TVs make great monitors.
  • OpenOffice can be used on a Media Director.
  • LinuxMCE's screen saver can turn a regular TV off (when there's no activity) and back on automatically.
  • Web pages can be browsed on the Media Directors from the on-screen Orbiter.
  • Web pages can be browsed on other Orbiters, as well.
  • When you have multiple homes with LinuxMCE systems, they can all be joined as one. Each LinuxMCE Core can automatically create a VPN (virtual private network) connection to another. It's safe and fully encrypted. The benefit is that you can go from one house to another and know that you will still have access to all your files, no matter where you are, without the hassle of copying them.
  • LinuxMCE automatically creates a network share for each family member so you can put all your regular computer files there, too. You can access any of your files anytime, anywhere - LinuxMCE automatically creates a password-protected personal web page for each family member.
