From MeeGo.com:

"MeeGo is an open source, Linux project which brings together the Moblin project, headed up by Intel, and Maemo, by Nokia, into a single open source activity. MeeGo integrates the experience and skills of two significant development ecosystems, versed in communications and computing technologies. The MeeGo project believes these two pillars form the technical foundations for next generation platforms and usages in the mobile and device platforms space."

What this means to LinuxMCE

MeeGo represents a possible path to moving LinuxMCE closer to its goal of being an appliance, turn it on and forget about it. It is a lightweight Linux distribution that targets precisely the targets we wish to target, and contains all the needed to build a fast, lightweight systems stack around LinuxMCE.

Goals

Overall Goals include:

  • To use MeeGo as an operating platform for media directors in LinuxMCE.
    • MID Devices
    • Handsets
    • Embedded TV with PC components
    • IP Telephones
  • To use MeeGo as an operating platform for Core machines in LinuxMCE.

Systems Level goals include:

  • Proving that Orbiter can be built as a MeeGo Package (DONE)
  • Proving that a MeeGo system stack can be built using MeeGo Tools to produce an Operating System which runs Orbiter (DONE)
  • Porting Pluto Storage Devices to MeeGo
  • Porting The Media Director componets to MeeGo
