The Realtek 8139 card (or perhaps the motherboard it is plugged into) can get into a bad state that is not fixed by rebooting.  One manifestation of this problem is that during LinuxMCE card "has bad mac address" is reported.  Once the card is in that state, it must be powered down completely by unplugging the computer power supply and waiting until all power to the motherboard is cut before repowering.

One of the cheapest 10/100 Mbps network cards that can be found. Works very well with LinuxMCE, no extra setup required, unless you want it to boot a diskless machine.
